My title at the Gannett-Tripp Library is Research and Instruction Librarian. What this means is: I supervise reference service provided at the Research Help Desk; I teach students and faculty how to use the library’s resources and find articles, books, and so forth; and I help answer research questions from Elmira College’s students and staff.
I’m also in charge of the library’s government documents collection. EC has participated in the Federal Depository Library Program since 1956, so we’ve accumulated a wide range of government-published material over the years. Since the U.S. government is publishing more and more material online, I help provide access to that as well.
Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy, neither warm nor cold, light nor dark. The pleasure they give is steady, unorgastic, reliable, deep and long-lasting. In any library in the world, I am at home, unselfconscious, still and absorbed.
