    Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Microsoft Surface Pro adequate for student academic work?

The Surface Pro (AKA Surface Pro 5) is an upgrade to the Surface Pro 4 and is an excellent laptop for student use. Go to the Surface Pro Overview for details. However, avoid purchasing an under-equipped Surface Pro. We recommend the following configuration:
    • Surface Pro with an i5 processor
    • 8GB of memory
    • 256GB SSD (flash) drive
    • Surface Pro Type Cover (keyboard)
    • Microsoft Complete for Surface Pro (2-year warranty and accidental protection)
Should students use USB flash drives?

USB flash drives are inexpensive and convenient to shuttle data between different computers. However, they are easily lost and if damaged usually are not backed up. We recommend that students take advantage of Google Drive, which is part of their Elmira College Google Account. 1 TB (terabyte!) of storage is available for Gmail, documents, photos, and videos.

Do laptops need a DVD drive? What are the options?

Students prefer light and portable laptops that can run hours before charging. In addition software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe products are downloadable and do not require a DVD. So an increasing number of laptops no longer include a DVD drive. As an option students can purchase an external USB drive from Apple or Dell for about $80.

Should Macintosh computers be protected with antivirus software?

As Macs have become popular they also have become more vulnerable so protection is highly recommended . Sophos Home Edition is well regarded, free and protects Macs from malware, viruses, ransomware, and inappropriate websites.  Follow the instructions to create an online account, download the software, and protect your computer.

Do I need to purchase antivirus software for my Windows computer?

Windows Defender Antivirus is built-in the Windows 10 operating system and automatically protects your computer in the background. There is no need to purchase separate antivirus software, which should be uninstalled to avoid conflicts with Defender.

Will students get to keep their Elmira College Office 365 and Google Apps accounts after they graduate?

Microsoft requires that access to Office 365 be removed when a student leaves Elmira College. After a short period of time, Office will stop functioning in full mode, although students will be able to read and printing any of their documents. However, they cannot create new documents or edit existing ones. A paid subscription would be required to extend Office 365 in full mode.

However, graduating students keep their Elmira College Google Apps forever (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sites and more.)

Graduating students - purchase Office to continue. Google Apps is free "forever"
