Syncing GMail with your iPhone

You can sync your Google Mail and Calendar and Contacts for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad using Apple's built-in Mail app. Please note that syncing all three requires choosing Microsoft's Exchange Activsync protocol as explained below.
  • Press the Settings button on your iPhone or iPod home screen.
  • Scroll and choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  • On the Mail, Contacts, and Calendar screen choose Add Account
  • Choose Microsoft Exchange, which uses the Exchange Activsync protocol to synchronize mail, contacts, and calendars.
Attention! If you are using an iPhone with iOS 4.0 or higher, you will be able to add multiple account using the MS Exchange Protocol. If you are using a phone that only allows one account using the MS Exchange Protocol, to add other accounts, go to http://www.google.com/mobile/iphone and follow the steps to install web-based version of GMail.
  • As shown below enter your full e-mail address in the Email box, skip the Domain box, enter your full e-mail address in the Username box, and carefully type your password including any uppercase characters. You can add a short description if you prefer.
  • Press the Next button. In the Server box type m.google.com
  • Press the Next button. Your Exchange account should be verified as shown below. If not, re-enter your account information.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Choose which Google apps you wish to synchronize. Mail, Contacts, and Calendar nicely sync with the corresponding apps of the same name on your iPhone – iPod Touch home screen.
  • Start the Mail app on your iPhone.
  • Choose your Gmail at  Elmira College mail account. Your Google Mail will download messages by label into their corresponding iPhone folders. Calendar events will display in the iPhone Calendar app, and your Contacts will display in the iPhone Calendar app.
  • Press the Settings button on your iPhone or iPod home screen. Scroll and choose Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Under Mail modify settings to customize your mail environment (e.g. font size, lines in preview). For your specific account make changes according to your needs (Mail Days to Sync, …).
Additional Resources
  • If you have multiple calendars in Gmail (separate ones for work, classes, and campus events for example) they may not all sync with the method just described. Here are two links that provide additional methods that other individuals have used to sync their calendars. The first link is from an iPhone 3GS user and the second link is from at iPhone 4 user, but these methods are not exclusive to each model of iPhone.
