Trimming Video with QuickTime Pro or MPEG Streamclip

Introduction

Your edTPA video submitted for assessment must be continuous and cannot be edited. However, you choose the best portion of your video by trimming start and end segments. It is important to trim the video and not recompress it during the save process. Recompressing can take a significant amount of time and result in the video actually increasing in size. There are two recommended tools for trimming video: QuickTime Pro, which is available on Macintoshes in the Multimedia Resource Lab or MPEG Streamclip, which is available as a free download for Macintosh and Windows computers.

QuickTime Pro (Macintosh Multimedia Lab)
  • Choose Apple menu > Multimedia > QuickTime Pro 7
  • Choose File > Open File, locate the video that you want to trim, and click the Open button.
  • Drag the left selection marker to the beginning of your final video.
  • Drag the right selection marker to the end of your final video.
Note clicking either selection marker will move the playhead there and display the start or end time of your selected video. In the diagram below the playhead displays 7:52 at the left selection marker.

  • From the Edit menu choose Trim to selection
The beginning and ending sections are removed leaving your final video. Keep in mind that it must be continuous and cannot be ended.
  • Drag the playhead through your video to be sure you have the complete recording.
  • Choose File > Export and choose Movie to MPEG-4.
  • Click the Options button.
  • To the right of Video Format choose Pass through. This will gray out all other options.
Pass through is required so that the video does not recompress, thus making the save process fast.
  • Click the OK button.
  • In the Save As box rename your video to something like teaching_video_final.mp4.
  • Click the Save button. The export process should only take a minute or two.
Attention! If you are using a lab computer make sure to archive the compressed video to your U drive (if there is enough space) or to a CD or DVD and then delete your video folder (e.g. Mark’s Videos) from the desktop, emptying the trash.

MPEG Streamclip (Windows or Macintosh)
  • Go to http://www.squared5.com, download Streamclip, and install it for your Mac or PC.
  • Position the player head at the point you want your video to start.
  • Choose Edit > Go to Keyframe.
  • Choose Edit > Select In.
  • Position the player head at the point you want your video to end.
  • Choose Edit > Go to Keyframe.
  • Choose Edit > Select Out.
  • Choose Edit > Trim.
  • Choose File > Save As
  • In the the Save As box rename your video to something like teaching_video_final.mp4
  • Click the Save button. The save process should only take a minute or two.
You can watch a demonstration video of the MPEG Streamclip trimming process.
