Slide Show of Student Services (3 seconds between slides)
At no charge Elmira College students can download and run Microsoft Office on up to five Windows or Macintosh computers. In addition, they can download Office apps on up to five of their mobile devices: Apple iOS or Android. (Windows Mobile includes Office apps by default.) Students first register and sign in with their Elmira e-mail address to access their personal software page. The subscription is available as long as you are a current student.
If you have questions, feel free to contact the IT Help Desk at 607-735-1915 or email@example.com.

Is a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 adequate for student academic work?
The Surface Pro 4 is a significant upgrade to the previous Surface and Surface Pro models and is an excellent laptop for student use. Go to microsoft.com/surface/en-us/devices/surface-pro-4 for details. However, we recommend the following configuration:
Should students use USB flash drives?
USB flash drives are inexpensive and convenient to shuttle data between different computers. However, they are easily lost and if damaged usually are not backed up. We recommend that students take advantage of Google Drive, which is part of their Elmira College Google Account. 1 TB (terabyte!) of storage is available for Gmail, documents, photos, and videos.
Do laptops need a DVD drive? What are the options?
Students prefer light and portable laptops that can run hours before charging. In addition software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe products are downloadable and do not require a DVD. So an increasing number of laptops no longer include a DVD drive. As an option students can purchase an external USB drive from Apple or Dell for about $80.
Where can students with MacBooks (or iMacs) find antispyware and antivirus software?
Elmira College students can log on with their Elmira College account to a website to download Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4, which supports Mavericks (10.9), Yosemite (10.10), and El Capitan (10.11). Go to sites.elmira.edu/helpdesk and click Protecting your Computer (Mac or Windows).
Why is Dell promoting McAfee when Windows Defender is recommended?
Dell has an agreement with McAfee to install the software by default. We recommend uninstalling McAfee (which requires a paid subscription after the trial period expires), after which you should be prompted to activate Windows Defender. If not, then go to Turn Windows Defender On.
Note! Do not activate Windows Defender until McAfee is uninstalled. Actively running two (or more) anti-malware programs will cause issues with your computer!
Is a Windows 8 laptop sufficient?
A laptop running Windows 8.1 is fine. At least 4GB of memory is recommended along with a three or four year warranty. Be sure that the laptop is running Microsoft Security Essentials.
Will students get to keep their Elmira College Office 365 and Google Apps accounts after they graduate?
Microsoft requires that access to Office 365 be removed when a student leaves Elmira College. After a short period of time, Office will stop functioning in full mode, although students will be able to read and printing any of their documents. However, they cannot create new documents or edit existing ones. A paid subscription would be required to extend Office 365 in full mode.
However, graduating students keep their Elmira College Google Apps forever (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sites and more.)
