Symantec Endpoint for Macintosh Computers

Note! This version of Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.6 supports Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), 10.9 (Mavericks), 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan), and 10.12 (Sierra)

but is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or earlier.

Attention! When installing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SE)) make sure that your Macintosh laptop is plugged in to a power source. 

Symantec Endpoint Protection software is licensed for Elmira College students with an active EC logon account. 
  • Download the Symantec EndPoint installer (.zip archive file) for your Macintosh computer (Mac OS X 10.7, 10.8, or 10.9, 10.10, 10.11, 10.12).

  • You will be prompted to enter your Elmira College username and password.
  • Wait patiently while the file downloads to your computer. An Ethernet connection will be faster than a wired connection.  
Symantec Endpoint Protection (formerly Norton Antivirus) is a program used to detect and remove computer viruses and malware. Elmira College licenses Symantec EndPoint Protection for use on personal computers owned by Elmira College students.

IMPORTANT: Symantec Endpoint Protection is not a free program; it is licensed only for use by faculty, staff and students at Elmira College. You may not give it to individuals who are not members of Elmira College. Symantec Endpoint Protection must be uninstalled when you are no longer affiliated with Elmira College or if your computer is transferred to another user.

Prior to installation, be sure to uninstall or disable any other antispyware and antivirus protection software currently on your system.  Refer to your anti-virus user documentation for removal instructions.

Symantec AntiVirus (vendor: Symantec Corporation) is a virus and spyware detection and eradication tool. Symantec's active protection feature can detect infection as it occurs, and LiveUpdate permits users to maintain a current version of Symantec virus definitions.

License Symantec Endpoint Protection may be used by Elmira College full-time students. No student may continue to use Symantec Endpoint Protection once they are no longer affiliated with Elmira College. Symantec Endpoint Protection must be removed immediately in the event that a Elmira College user discontinues ownership of a computer system that has Symantec Endpoint Protection installed. By downloading this software you agree to these limitations.

Tasks Not Supported:
Some supported tasks require lengthy time to perform.  Help Desk Specialists may not be able to wait on the phone with users while scans are in progress.
Download and Installation
I have read the support and licensing statements and I'm ready to download Symantec Endpoint Protection.

You will encounter a Firefox download dialog box. Click Save File and then click the OK button.

  • Double-click the Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_12.1.6_Mac_Client_EN.zip file to extract its contents.
  • Double-click the Symantec Endpoint Protection.dmg disk image file to open it. 
  • Double-click Symantec EndPoint Protection Installer.app.
  • Follow the instructions to install the software. You may have to authenticate by typing your personal password for your Macintosh computer. 
Do not interrupt the process during installation and again be sure your Macintosh is plugged into a power source.
  • Wait patiently until the installation nears completion then click the Close and Restart button when prompted. 
  • After your computer restarts you may be prompted with an Error message. Click the OK button. 
  • When prompted click the Update Now button.

  • Wait until LiveUpdate responds with Your software is up to date and click Quit when prompted. 
  • The installer places the Symantec QuickMenu in the right menubar at the top of your screen. 

Manually Updating SEP

  • In the Symantec Quickmenu at the top of your screen choose LiveUpdate > Open LiveUpdate
  • Click Update Now and then when prompted with Your software is up to date click Quit. (This is expected given that you just updated the software.) 

Scheduled Product Updates

  • In the Symantec Quickmenu choose Symantec Endpoint Protection > Open Symantec Endpoint Protection. You will see a status update:

  • Click the Settings button and then the LiveUpdate tab. 
  • Choose LiveUpdate Schedule = Daily and Start Time = 6:00 am or an early time when the network is least active. 
  • Click the Apply Changes button.
  • Select Quit Symantec Scheduler from the Symantec Scheduler menu.
  • Quit the LiveUpdate menu.
  • Quit the Symantec AntiVirus window. Live Updates will now occur according to your customized schedule.

Detecting and Removing Spyware and Viruses

Once Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed and updated, you may choose to manually scan your computer for spyware and viruses. Follow the steps outlined below:
  • In the Symantec Quickmenu at the top of your screen choose Symantec Antivirus > Open Symantec AntiVirus.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select the particular drive or folder you wish to scan and click on the Select button.
  • Once the scan is complete, click Close to close the virus scan window.

Protecting your Computer

Symantec Endpoint Protection contains some features which permit you to run automatic and scheduled scans. Many of these virus protection measures are turned on by default upon installation of SEP.


An antivirus and antispyware scan will be performed automatically when a file is downloaded or opened, when an application is launched, or when a disk is inserted. Automatic scans provide continuous virus protection.

Scheduled Virus Scans

  • In the Symantec Quickmenu choose Symantec Endpoint Protection > Open Symantec Endpoint Protection
  • Click the Settings button and then the Virus and Spyware Protection tab. 
  • Click Configure under Scheduled Scans
  • Click Add scheduled scans ... 
  • To the right of Scan Name enter Weekly Full Scan.  
  • Click the Scan Items tab check Drives > Hard drives. Check Scan Options > Auto Quarantine. 
  • Click the Scan Schedule and choose Scan Schedule: Weekly , Start Time: 6:00 AM, and On: Sunday or a day and time when your MacBook will be least used. 
  • Click the OK button to apply changes to both tabs.

  • Click the Done button.
  • Quit SEP.
